Clearwater Public Walking Tracks

Nine kilometres of walking tracks span the perimeter of Clearwater’s championship golf course, adjacent farmlands and ecological heritage sites such as The Groynes Recreation Reserve. The tracks meander alongside aquifer-fed lakes and the Otukaikino Stream, with expansive views of the Southern Alps beyond.

A map of the tracks with information about features is available from all Council offices, the Clearwater Golf Shop, Peppers hotel reception, or download using the link below.

Walkers should allow up to three hours in total to cover both tracks, during which time they may see summer brown trout rising for mayflies along the Otukaikino Stream, ground-dwelling pukeko and Californian quail (one quail family has been resident on the 13th tee), fantails and Welcome Swallows.

New Zealand PGA Championship

The 2010 NZ PGA will be held on Thursday 21 January to Sunday 24 January.

The 2010 Pro-Am will be held on Wednesday 20 January.

The NZ PGA Championship was first won by J.H Kirkwood in its inaugural year in 1920. The event was played for 19 years and won 6 times over that period by A. J. Shaw before it was cancelled from 1940-1945 due to WW2.

Resuming in 1946 A. J. Shaw had lost none of his touch and won the first post war event. The tournament was played annually with just two cancellations between 1946 and 1987. Over that period Australian Kel Nagle equalled A. J. Shaw’s record of seven NZ PGA Titles.

In 1965, the tournament was taken over by the NZ PGA and played as a 72-hole stroke play Championship. The tournament was not contested between 1988 - 2003 with Frank Nobilo the last winner of the event before it was cancelled in 1987.

The Championship returned in 2004 and was won by Australian Gavin Coles with another Australian, Peter O’Malley, winning in 2005.

Winner of the 2006 New Zealand NZ PGA was Canadian Jim Rutledge, 46, who shot the tournament’s low score of 64, eight-under par, in the final round.

The 2007 Championship was won by Nicholas Thomson with a four-round score of 280.

The 2008 Championship was won by Darron Stiles - with a rain interrupted 2-round score of 134.

Clearwater is a par 72-championship layout designed by John Darby in consultation with New Zealand golfing legend, Sir Bob Charles. The course combines elements of links golf inspired by the great Scottish courses with parkland golf, more reminiscent of Florida.
